Comic Relief: Small and Diaspora UK NGO Fund

Comic Relief believes that small and diaspora-led NGOs play a crucial role in development, but often struggle to access funding. For that reason, Comic Relief have a designated Small and Diaspora UK NGO Fund to specifically support work by small and diaspora-led NGOs. The fund total is approximately £3 million. There’s no minimum grant size, but the maximum grant size available is £350,000.

OpenData NI Challenge

The OpenDataNI Challenge is a competition jointly funded by the Department of Finance and the Department for the Economy on behalf of the NI Digital Catapult and is supported by the NI Science Park, ODI Belfast, and Ulster University.  Applicants are asked to harness the power of public sector open data on OpenDataNI in the development of new teaching resources which can be used by schools. The resource can be developed for either primary or secondary level education.  The winning applicant will receive £20,000 to develop their idea.

Department for Infrastructure (DfI): Road Safety Grants

The DfI Road Safety Grant Scheme for the Voluntary & Community Sector in Northern Ireland 2016/17 offers individuals and community groups an opportunity to apply for funding of up to £10,000 to develop and deliver local road safety initiatives.  The scheme has been running since 2010 (previously under Department of Environment).  During this time it awarded more than £700,000 to 89 projects.

PRSF: The Open Fund for Organisations

The Open Fund for Organisations offers grants of up to £10,000 to support new music projects led by promoters, talent development organisations, venues, curators and large performance groups (i,e. 12 + performers).  Projects must involve the creation, performance and promotion of new music and enable songwriters, composers, artists, bands and performers of all backgrounds to develop creatively and professionally.

Northern Ireland Screen: Development Funding

NI Screen support the development of feature film and television drama scripts for individuals and companies. The maximum award for script development to an individual is £2,250. Script development awards to companies are available in stages up to a maximum of £40,000. Northern Ireland Screen is interested to hear from Northern Ireland writers and writing teams, as well as Northern Ireland based companies.

Money Advice Service: What Works Fund 

In support of the UK Financial Capability Strategy, the Money Advice Service's What Works Fund was set up to increase understanding of how best to improve people's financial capability. The £7 million fund will be available to organisations to help them pilot new approaches to improving financial capability and evaluate their projects. The What Works Fund will provide financial support for projects which are focused on building evidence of the types of interventions that can make a measurable difference to people’s financial capability.

Belfast City Council Small Grants: Community Festivals Fund

The Community Festivals Fund is jointly funded by Belfast City Council and the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure to recognise the role that festivals can play in increasing social cohesion, celebrating cultural identity and strengthening community relations. Funding is available for community festivals taking place within the Belfast local government district, that focus on aarts and heritage activities and other cultural events that contribute to the cultural identity of an area or group and celebrate the uniqueness of that area or group.

Comic Relief: Communities & Sport for Change

This funding scheme is part of Comic Relief's Sport for Change strategy which runs across both their UK and international funding and their four programme areas. This scheme aims to fund projects which use sport as a catalyst for change, helping people to take ownership and feel part of increasingly inclusive and cohesive communities and also feel empowered to identify and solve the social issues affecting their communities. Grants of between £40,000 and £75,000 for up to two years of activity are available.

Nuffield Foundation Programme Grants

The Nuffield Foundation's aim is to bring about improvements in society through research and practical experiment. The wide range of activities supported by the Foundation fall includes access to justice; child protection and family justice; education and social science.

Sport NI: Active Awards for Sport

Active Awards is an exchequer funded small grants programme primarily aimed at grassroots community based sport. The programme aims to prioritise investment in sports clubs, community groups and governing bodies of sport, especially those based in areas of greatest need.  Eligible groups can apply for grants from £1,000 – £10,000.
