On 4 April 2006 the Minister for Social Development, David Hanson announced that Local Community Fund was to be relaunched as a strand of the Capacity Building in Disadvantaged Communities Programme.  The relaunched fund will be used to build the capacity of groups and organisations to tackle disadvantage and to provide leadership to communities in need and will have, as a key priority, the needs of communities that do not have the capacity to fully participate in other programmes.

The Local Community Fund will spend £4 million over the next two years in the 11%-20% most disadvantaged communities as measured by the Nobel Index 2005.

Voluntary and Community Unit are currently considering delivery and implementation arrangements for the relaunched Local Community Fund.

The Department is currently finalising the targeted areas and allocations for 2006-2008 and hopes to be able to make a further announcement in July.
