The convention is aimed at encouraging, motivating and skilling local fundraisers to face the challenges of today’s difficult economic climate, to consider how the recession will impact on the charity sector and the practical steps organisations can take to counteract the negative affects of the economic downturn.
Vicki Maguire, Chair of the Institute of Fundraising NI said:
“There is broad agreement amongst charities that income will not increase and will probably decrease during the next 12 months. Add to that the already evident rise in costs and the majority of charities find themselves needing to take action in advance of an anticipated net reduction in available cash. A significant number of charities, however, also see opportunities arising from this current climate and we would urge all charities to use the recession to take a closer look at their services and focus on key goals and where their help will make the biggest difference.”
Experience of previous recessions has shown that, during times of economic difficulties, there is a greater empathy for those who benefit from the support provided by charities. Charities need to use this time to reassess their position and emerge stronger, with those that don't at risk of falling behind.
Mark Pollock, Northern Ireland’s own champion adventurer, who recently became the first blind man to reach the South Pole is one of the main speakers at the convention. Roger Courtney, former CEO of Simon Community NI will also share his wealth of knowledge of the voluntary sector.
