Coleraine Awards Community Grants
The Development Services Unit at Coleraine Borough Council recently held a Mayoral Reception to acknowledge the achievements of community and voluntary organisations which are in receipt of funding or who have participated in training facilitated through the Community Development Section within the Coleraine Borough Council area.
In 2007-2008 approximately one hundred and forty six grants and service level agreements ere provided to over eighty community and voluntary groups with a value of over £351,500. Projects that were awarded funding included activities to promote social inclusion, capacity building, cross community contact, cultural identity and initiatives which address geographical polarisation to mention but a few.
Mayor of Coleraine, Cllr David Barbour was enthused and encouraged by the individuals and groups who strive to better our communities; he said,
The event was organised to recognise the many hours of voluntary commitment that committees and volunteers dedicate to improving our communities.
The voluntary and community organisations play a vital role in society today, including lobbying for improved access to services, providing social and educational opportunities for local residents. As well as improving good relations within and between communities.
Julie Welsh, Community Development Manager at Coleraine Borough Council, added;
Such grants and service level agreements have assisted the community sector to develop infrastructure necessary to meet local community needs. Organisations receiving this funding address a wide range of issues, offer support to victims, advice services, volunteering, disability, race relations and promoting good relations. We are very pleased to be in a position to fund such worthwhile projects and activities."
The grants form part of the Community Support Plan and Good Relations Strategy, which are Council's strategies to support community development and good relations within the Borough and are funded through the Voluntary and Community Unit (DSD), Community Relations Unit (OFMDFM) and through Coleraine Borough Council.
