Fundraising from grant-making organisations often referred to simply as 'funders' often forms a large percentage of a voluntary and community organisations revenue.

The range of sources for grants can be categorised in a few different ways but normally the list would be as follows:

  • Statutory: Regional and Local, Central, European Union (Programmes, Community Initiatives and Budget Lines), National Lottery (Distributed through various voluntary and statutory agencies)
  • Voluntary: Independent Grant-making Trusts/Foundation, Clubs and Societies: Organisations who are independent and autonomously governed who can make grants in support of other charitable causes. They can operate on a local, regional, national or international scale.
  • Private: Corporate Charitable Trusts, Charities of the Year: Businesses who operate corporate social responsibility policies or who have established a charitable trust.

Grant-making organisations normally operate by inviting applications from funders in their area of interest either through an open application process or by selecting specific causes to support in an unsolicited manner.
