Retail Gift Aid - claiming Gift Aid on donated items

In traditional circumstances when items are donated to a charity for fundraising purposes the value of these goods cannot be Gift Aided because Gift Aid can only be applied to cash donations. However if the charity can agree with supporters to sell goods on their behalf and then supporters donate the proceeds as cash this can be Gift Aided and add a further 28% to the income generated.

The Tax-effective-giving campaign from the Institute of Fundraising provides a model sponsorship form which incorporates a column and declaration to enable charities to claim Gift Aid on the relevant donations.

This form is recommended to any charity in Northern Ireland running their own sponsorship events or for entry in other events such as the Belfast City Marathon.

Gift Aid and Charity Shops

Third Sector has reported that St Giles Hospice based in Lichfield, Staffordshire has joined a growing list of charities which apply Gift Aid to Charity Shop donations.

In November 2006, Sue Ryder Care was the first charity in the UK to apply Gift Aid to goods donated to its charity shops.
