The Arts Council will permit only 9 organisation to 'apply' for funding in the 2007 to 2008 financial year - putting the scheme 'under review' for everybody else to allow these 9 organisations to bid for an additional year's funding.

The recent review of SIAP indicated that there was a perception that it is difficult for new and emerging artists to receive awards and that the same artists receive funds year on year.

The Arts Council is the body which makes the decision on how lottery revenue and exchequer revenue is spent on the arts in Northern Ireland. In January it decided to move the General Art Awards and Artist Studio Scheme under National Lottery budgets.

The Education Minister, Ruth Kelly announced that the Government is committing £60 million from the Big Lottery Fund and the Department for Education and Skills to enable a new School Food Trust to give independent support and advice to schools and parents to improve the standard of school meals.
